Fan tokens: what they are, why they are needed, and which projects lead the market
As of August 2026, the cryptocurrency market comprises more than 200 different segments, with some of them reaching market capitalizations of hundreds of millions or even billions of US dollars.
While some crypto segments aim to reach a global audience, others seek to attract a narrower but more engaged target group. Fan tokens belong to the latter category of digital assets.
What are fan tokens?
Fan tokens are blockchain-based digital assets issued by various organizations in the entertainment industry, including sports clubs, esports teams, music groups, and different brands.
However, market-tracking platforms such as CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko primarily classify assets issued by sports organizations — most commonly football clubs — as fan tokens. As of August 2026, there are more than 60 different fan tokens on the cryptocurrency market.
As a rule, fan tokens do not have large market capitalizations and mainly attract the attention of dedicated fans.
According to CoinGecko data from August 2026, the total market capitalization of fan tokens stands at just $142 million. Only a few fan tokens on the market have a capitalization exceeding $10 million.
What functions do fan tokens perform?
To give a fan token value, the company that issues it provides token holders with various privileges, such as:
- The opportunity to participate in voting and influence the development of a club or brand;
- Access to VIP areas and services;
- Participation in prize draws and other events;
- Access to meet-and-greet events with their idols;
- Access to limited-edition products, such as merchandise;
- Other exclusive opportunities that can attract attention and encourage people to invest in fan tokens.
In some cases, fan token holders have been invited to choose the design of club merchandise, music played at the stadium, wording on the captain's armband, the design of the team bus, or a charitable initiative. The club determines the specific range of issues put to a vote.
The more exclusive the privileges, the more valuable the fan token may appear to buyers. However, issuers need to continuously maintain interest in their fan tokens, as these are speculative assets similar to memecoins and can rise rapidly in price or fall just as sharply.
What determines the price of fan tokens?
The price of fan tokens can be affected by a team's performance, transfers of famous players, major tournaments, the launch of new privileges, exchange listings, and the general situation in the cryptocurrency market. However, a team's victories alone do not guarantee an increase in the value of its fan token.
The price also depends on the number of fan tokens in circulation and their liquidity. Due to their relatively small market capitalization, a large purchase or sale can have a noticeable impact on a fan token's price. For the same reason, the spread between the buying and selling prices of some assets can be substantial.
Studies of fan token price movements have identified a "buy the rumor, sell the news" effect: an asset's price may rise ahead of an important match or tournament and decline after the event, even if the result was favorable. This is an observed market pattern rather than a universal rule.
The largest fan tokens on the cryptocurrency market
1. Chiliz (CHZ)
Although Chiliz became the first fan token on the cryptocurrency market and essentially pioneered this segment, it is not included in fan token rankings. It is itself the native asset of a blockchain platform.
Chiliz is described as the "leading provider of blockchain technology for the global sports and entertainment industry." The Chiliz team launched the first platform for issuing fan tokens, called Socios.com.
Socios.com platform works with more than 70 sports organizations. Its ecosystem includes football and esports clubs, national teams, motorsport teams, and representatives of other sporting disciplines. Through this platform, sports teams and clubs conduct an FTO, or Fan Token Offering — the initial offering of fan tokens.
As of August 2026, the market capitalization of the Chiliz fan token exceeds $130 million, with CHZ trading at $0.012. However, the fan token has shown negative performance, as has the segment as a whole: compared with its all-time high of $0.87, reached in March 2021, the price of CHZ has fallen by more than 98%.
At its peak, the market capitalization of the CHZ fan token exceeded $4 billion, making it one of the largest assets on the cryptocurrency market. However, the 2022 crypto industry crisis made its own adjustments. After the market recovered, the CHZ fan token failed to withstand the competition and surrendered its leading position to other promising assets.
2. Croatian Football Federation Token (VATRENI)
VATRENI is a fan token issued by the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) in December 2022. The VATRENI fan token provides its holders with access to exclusive sporting events, limited-edition products, and other VIP privileges.
During the first three years after its launch, the VATRENI fan token attracted little interest. However, its price began to rise rapidly in 2025, when the cryptocurrency market as a whole was showing positive momentum.
Since being listed on exchanges, the price of the VATRENI fan token has increased by more than 2,000%, reaching almost $1.10, while its market capitalization has approached $20 million.
3. Atletico Madrid Fan Token (ATM)
ATM is a utility fan token issued in June 2020 by the famous Spanish football club Atletico Madrid on the Chiliz blockchain. The Atletico Madrid Fan Token team later added support for the Solana and Base networks.
The ATM fan token grants its holders exclusive fan rights, such as:
- Participation in the sports club's official votes;
- Access to VIP services and in-person meetings with players;
- The opportunity to receive rewards and participate in the club's prize draws.
As of August 2026, the market capitalization of the ATM fan token stands at $13.5 million, while its price is $1.52. The ATM fan token reached its peak price of $58.46 in May 2021. However, its price has fallen by more than 97% from its all-time high, indicating weak performance and low demand among the club's supporters.
4. OG Fan Token (OG)
OG was launched on the Chiliz blockchain in June 2020 and ranks among the five largest fan tokens on the cryptocurrency market. The OG fan token was issued by OG Esports, one of the world's best-known esports brands.
Despite the OG fan token having no practical utility, the asset remains one of the leaders in its segment and retains a loyal audience.
As of August 2026, the OG fan token is priced at $2.50, with a market capitalization of $12.1 million. The OG fan token reached its all-time high of $24.78 in September 2025, when the cryptocurrency market hit its latest peak to date. However, the price of OG has since fallen by almost 90%.
5. FIGHT (FIGHT)
FIGHT is a fan token launched in early 2026, initially within the Solana ecosystem and later added to BNB Chain. The FIGHT fan token belongs to the ecosystem of the same name, which has entered into a partnership with the international sports organization UFC.
The purpose of the FIGHT fan token was to introduce combat sports fans to the cryptocurrency industry. FIGHT fan tokens allow their holders to participate in various sporting events, place bets on them, and gain access to exclusive merchandise.
Immediately after being listed on exchanges, the FIGHT fan token surged to its all-time high of $0.03, while its market capitalization reached almost $50 million. However, the FIGHT fan token failed to retain its investors, and its price declined just as rapidly.
As of August 2026, the FIGHT fan token is priced at almost $0.004, with a market capitalization of $8.17 million. Compared with its peak, the price of the FIGHT fan token has fallen by more than 87%.
Why are fan tokens relevant in 2026?
One of the reasons for the relevance of fan tokens in 2026 was the FIFA World Cup. The tournament increased interest in the digital assets of national teams and football clubs. Against this backdrop, new official projects emerged: for example, the initial offering of the Spanish national team's SPAIN fan token took place on June 19, 2026.
In 2026, Chiliz also began expanding fan tokens beyond the Chiliz Chain to the Solana and Base networks. Chiliz Chain remains the ecosystem's primary infrastructure, while Solana and Base are used to expand distribution, improve liquidity, and provide access to DeFi services. For projects, this means reaching a broader potential audience, while fan token holders gain more ways to manage their assets and potentially benefit from more convenient and less expensive transactions.
Another innovation introduced in 2026 was the Burn to Glory campaign, launched by Chiliz for the FIFA World Cup. The campaign involved the fan tokens of five national teams: ARG for Argentina, BELG for Belgium, POR for Portugal, SAFA for South Africa, and SFA for Scotland.
The campaign's mechanics directly linked the teams' sporting results to the supply of their digital assets: after each victory, a certain portion of their fan tokens was permanently burned. During the group stage, the burn amount started at 1% of the treasury reserve. It increased as the national team progressed through the tournament bracket, reaching its maximum level in the final.
The burning process involved only fan tokens held in the project's reserve, meaning users' assets were not affected. This mechanism gradually reduces the total supply of a fan token and potentially makes it scarcer. In theory, if demand remains stable or increases, this may support the asset's value.
