Unusual cryptocurrencies that have caught the attention of users

Some crypto projects stand out so much that their existence is absurd or, at the very least, comical. While not all such digital assets have managed to stay afloat, they have left a notable mark in the history of cryptocurrencies.

1. Dogelon Mars (ELON)

The only cryptocurrency on this list that survived the crypto storm is still listed on exchanges and CoinMarketCap. Dogelon Mars (ELON) is a well-known meme token traded on crypto exchanges such as OKX, Bitget, KuCoin, and MEXC. Despite the name, the ELON token is not related to the famous entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, but reflects his love for memcoins.

Dogelon Mars is an ERC-20 token issued on the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains in April 2021 — right before the biggest bull run in the cryptocurrency market. At its peak in July of that year, the price of the ELON token reached $0.00003, and its market capitalization exceeded $1 billion. The ELON token also exists on the BNB Smart Chain, Solana, and Cronos blockchain networks, which are backed by the well-known Crypto.com exchange.

The Dogelon Mars token stands out for its large maximum issuance, which amounts to a quadrillion ELON tokens. According to CoinMarketCap's monitoring service, more than half of ELON tokens — 549 trillion — are circulating on the market.

In addition, Dogelon Mars has another feature: 50% of the tokens not distributed among token holders were sent to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's wallet. At the same time, the other half was permanently blocked in liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap and Raydium.

As of March 2025, the Dogelon Mars token has a market capitalization of $74 million and a price of $0.0000001352, more than 99.5% below its all-time high (ATH). However, despite the low demand, the Dogelon Mars token rate grew along with the crypto market between October 2024 and January 2025.

2. Mooncoin (MOON)

Mooncoin, the oldest cryptocurrency on this list, was created in 2013 at the dawn of the crypto market. Astronomy enthusiasts probably created the token, and the crypto community seriously expected Mooncoin to be sent to the Moon.

It is noteworthy that Mooncoin's maximum token supply of 384 billion MOON refers to the distance between Earth and its satellite Moon, which is about 384,000 kilometers. However, according to the CMC service, only 230 billion are circulating on the market — the remaining tokens have never been released into circulation.

One step for a cryptocurrency is a massive leap for the crypto industry, which unfortunately did not happen for Mooncoin. Although the token's page still exists on CoinMarketCap, as of March 2025, Mooncoin is unlisted on exchanges, and at its peak, its market capitalization was just over $6 million. MOON itself can be considered "dead" and will probably only be valued by crypto-enthusiasts as a showpiece someday.

3. Pepemon Pepeballs (PPBLZ)

The creators of meme tokens come up with unusual names. Other examples include the Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) and ACT I: The AI Prophecy (ACT) meme tokens, which have become popular assets in the crypto market.

Although Pepemon Pepeballs didn't become one, this token has attracted a lot of attention in its time, becoming an homage to one of the significant cultural phenomena of the last decades — Pokémon and Pepe the Frog.

What made Pepemon Pepeballs special was the minimal issue limit of only 14,000 PPBLZ tokens. Pepemon Pepeballs is a regular ERC-20 token, not an NFT.

However, neither the limited issuance nor the homage to high-profile cultural phenomena has helped Pepemon Pepeballs to compete in the crypto market. According to CMC's March 2025 data, the price of the PPBLZ token is unlisted, and its capitalization is only $337,000.

4. Poocoin (POOCOIN)

Poocoin is a BEP-20 token issued on the BNB Smart Chain blockchain. The very name of the token, Poocoin, literally means "shitcoin" in English.

The first feature of this token is that it has its platform Poocoin.app, for tracking shitcoin rates on decentralized exchanges (DEXes).

However, Poocoin has another feature: each transaction with this token is charged an 8% fee, half of which is distributed to POOCOIN holders. Therefore, despite such an unsightly name, the token itself is not a typical useless shitcoin, even though it is not very popular among users. The other half of the tokens received from commissions are burned, which makes the POOCOIN stock more limited and may positively impact the asset's exchange rate in the future.

Despite the demand for the platform of the same name, the Poocoin token itself is not in high demand. According to the information provided on the website of the CoinMarketCap service for March 2025, the Poocoin token is only in 7375th place in the general ranking of cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, which is $1.67 million (and according to unconfirmed data).

At the same time, the POOCOIN token itself has a small maximum volume — only 10 million. However, slightly more than half of the tokens are circulating on the market — 5.08 million POOCOIN. Therefore, even with such a small market capitalization, the exchange rate of the POOCOIN token is $0.32 as of March 2025.

5. SOCKS Token (SOCKS).

Cryptocurrencies do not symbolize anything: crypto projects are dedicated to the dental field and various cults, such as Cthulhu. Developers have made a separate cryptocurrency, SOCKS Token, a non-fungible token (NFT), even for socks.

Moreover, owners of SOCKS tokens claim the right to receive a pair of absolute socks from a limited edition with an original design. The SOCKS Token has one more peculiarity: only 500 SOCKS tokens were issued (even though many NFT tokens have a large issue).

The SOCKS token's initial price after listing on exchanges in 2021 was $12. In August of that year, it rose to a record $152,933, more than twice the absolute price maximum of the main cryptocurrency on the market, BTC, reached in the same year.

However, neither originality nor a highly limited issue helped the token stay on the crypto market: little has been known about the project for a long time, and the SOCKS Token itself is not listed anywhere else.
