bKash in Bangladesh: how to open an account and use the platform

About the bKash platform

The bKash service was officially launched in 2011, and by 2025, the number of platform users in Bangladesh had exceeded 82 million. bKash is a financial service created by the private Bangladeshi commercial bank BRAC Bank in partnership with the American company Money in Motion LLC. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was also involved in the creation of bKash.

The developers of the service position bKash as a universal mobile banking platform for all financial solutions, stating that it meets the needs of both individuals and businesses.

bKash has repeatedly received prestigious awards, including international ones. For example, in 2023, the service was awarded the "Fintech Pioneer" prize for its leading role in the development of digital payment services in Bangladesh.

Opening an account in Bangladeshi taka on the bKash platform

As of March 2026, residents of Bangladesh aged 18 and over, including those living abroad, can open an account on the bKash mobile platform. To open an account, a smart card (digital ID, NID), passport, or driver's license is required.

Clients who currently use services such as the following can also open an account under a simplified procedure:

  • Robi;
  • Grameenphone;
  • Banglalink;
  • Teletalk;
  • Airtel.

In addition to standard accounts, the bKash mobile platform also supports special student accounts. Unlike regular accounts, student accounts can be opened by individuals aged 14 to 18 with a birth certificate and an active bKash account belonging to at least one parent.

A bKash account can be opened through the mobile app. To do this, you need to install the app and log in, then enter your mobile phone number. Next, you will need to enter the verification code sent by SMS, accept the terms of use, and take a photo of your ID document and a selfie for user identification.

After submitting all the required data, you should wait for the information to be verified in order to open the account. Verification usually takes up to 48 hours, after which the customer will have access to all the features of the mobile platform. A bKash account can also be opened through special digital identification points or bank branches in Bangladesh.
